"Looks like New Haven". No, it doesn't. This is the action of a few, not the majority of city residents. I live in New Haven, I own a home in New Haven in a neighborhood where no one would tolerate this sort of activity. I think our mayor needs to walk the downtown area to see what deterioration has been tolerated in the area around the Green. The sidewalk on Church Street, between Elm and Chapel is worn down to the underlay. The Green is littered. Temple at Chapel has people sleeping in the middle of the day at the bus stops. What is going on here? I'm not giving up on this, neither should you.

Our Green is truly an embarrassment and a travesty. I work downtown and would love to take my child there to run and play, but it's impossible. Garbage, cigarette and lord knows what other kind of butts, needles/syringes, body effluvia of various kinds -- all things you are apt to stumble over if you step off the sidewalk. Of course, the fact that the entire "grass" area is actually just clusters of weeds does not make it especially enticing anyway. How can a city where people pay such high taxes be negligent about its supposed showpiece parks? I have never seen a city green that looks like this.

Nothing has changed. The city (and ordinary people not employed to do this) routinely sweeps through the Green and removes the trash. As the day progresses, trash comes back and builds up, especially under and around park benches, until city workers and volunteers clean it up again.
Cleaning up the evidence of poverty, drug abuse,disorder, homelessness, drunkenness doesn't seem to be solving the problem.
Is there a solution to this disturbing filth, that basically seals off most of the Green to use by everybody else?

And then you have a police dept. who refuses to enforce low level and quality of life laws witch would go a long way towards helping the problem. Instead they just watch it, witch gives people license to do what they want.

I'm leaving this open: Nothing has changed. The issue persists. No solution has been offered. No action is forthcoming from the City of New Haven. A bad situation left untended grows worse.

Seeclickfix auto reminder popped up again on this. I walked the New Haven Green yesterday. The snow and ice are gone but the trash is back. It will all get disorderly and filthy again until Arts & Ideas, then it will be clean for the taxpayers and visitors from the suburbs. Then it will get filthy again and be allowed to stay filthy. Because the City of New Haven, the New Haven Police Department, the New Haven Department of Public Works or Sanitation do not see a Clean New Haven Green as a priority unless an event is scheduled. People get fed up and clean it themselves. Yet there is no effort by the city, no stomach to tackle this problem of filth and littering. Why?

I have noticed NO improvement on The Green. Same number of homeless people with nowhere to go/nothing to do, same amount of alcohol containers, cigarette packages, fast food trash, napkins/tissues, random articles of clothing.

Still leaving this open. The only thing that will prevent the litter and trash is the dead of winter when few will want to hang out, drink beer out of paper bags, smoke, eat, and simply drop the little on the ground beneath and around their bench. Issuing tickets will do no good -- these people either have no money or wouldn't bother to pay it. It will take active enforcement and, to use a term from the time of the Green's origin, banishment.

Continuing to leave this issue open. I did see the downtown ambassadors with one of those long handled pickup tools gathering litter but this morning it's its normal state of squalor.

Still an issue, although we hope the new NHPD tactic of Sgt. Roy Davis results in improvement on the Green. The NHR story noted that the court has yet to give permission to police to issue tickets payable by community service. The perpetrators on the Green can't pay a fine because all their money goes to drugs, alcohol and cigarettes. But they can be forced to spend some time cleaning up their mess. So leaving open this long-standing issue in hopes that it may soon be closed.

Until this issue is confronted and addressed, the Green will remain a filthy mess that prevents tourists, visitors from nearby towns, and the law-abiding citizens of New Haven from using and enjoying the Green. This is shameful.

The Parks Department is trying to better manage SCF issues and are closing those from prior to 2015. Many should have been addressed by our routine work schedules, some may be issues that were not closed when work orders were completed. If the issue still remains please re-open the issue and if possible give more detail to its location.

Reopening this issue. Although this may have been posted awhile ago, it is not an old issue -- it is as current as a walk across the Green today and tomorrow, where this sacred place at the heart of old New Haven has been allowed to become befouled and to remain that way.

We are as frustrated by these behaviors as the public. We do have one caretaker assigned specifically to the green. He is there M-F from about 7:30 to about 3 (with the exception of breaks, lunch, sick time and vacations). But staff and cleanup is not the only solution. How do we as a community change the behaviors of others.

We are closing older Trash and Recycling issues from 2011-2015 in order to focus on current Trash and Recycling issues.
