Consider a speed table designed for the speed limit, 20 MPH(?) or 25 MPH, and a sign about neighborhood, children, the unarmored on the street. At least two speed tables designed for the speed limit would remind the armored drivers of their responsibility. Mr. Guillermo, thanks for raising this issue.

Hi! Could we please have an update on this issue? I have noticed that it is heavy trucks and lorries which speed up the most. A crosswalk is sorely needed! Thank you!

Police enforcement of the speed limit as the final construction is completed, insists that drivers drive safely through our neighborhoods. Driver training is an ongoing element of safety.

Bay State Road is the first example. Where is the enforcement for the safety of all of us?

You might also make the point that with the final paving, drivers are no longer slowed by rough pavement. Visible Police and enforcement will remind drivers of the new and lower speed limits.

With the substantial completion of the sewer separation project the City will be doing a speed and traffic volume count to better be able to address your concerns.

Per the City Engineer:

As part of the sewer separation construction in the Concord Ave neighborhood, significant improvements were made to Field Street and Bay State Road; new sidewalks along both sides of the streets where previously there were significant missing sections; squared off the Bay State Road and Birch Street intersection; added large planted area at Bay State Road and Birch Street; squared off entrance to the parking area opposite Birch Street; constructed priority crossings at Bay State Road and Fern Street; squared off intersection of Bay State Road and New Street; and added raised crosswalk across Bay State Road at Concord Ave. And more recently, we have added shared lane markings for cyclists. All of these improvements together have significantly improved the conditions for people walking, biking and driving in the area,

As part of the post-construction evaluation, we have collected speed and volume data for each street in the project area. That data is available on the City’s website at: http://www.cambridgema.gov/~/media/Files/publicworksdepartment/Engineering/cityprojects/alewifesewerseparation/atrfiguresheet.pdf. The speed limit on Bay State Road is 25 mph. The speed data is very consistent with what we see for speeds on city streets and indicates that the 85th percentile speed (the speed under which 85% of traffic travels) is between 26 And 28 mph, depending on the exact location. Based on the extensive improvements constructed and the speed data, we do not recommend additional construction at this time.
