No action was ever taken by this do-nothing mayor. For the entire season, the lights remained on. Further waste surrounding this park: gates left unlocked and opened 24/7, resulting in thousands of dollars of damage caused by vandals.

I agree turn off the lights, lock the gate, costing WH taxpayers a fortune, baseball is done for the season.

Thanks, but baseball's not done: the "Fall Ball" season just started, and now's when the light usage really spikes. Gates still open 24/7, and the "donuting" and hotrodding at night continues apace. Perhaps the city should sponsor a derby, aince their failure to do anything to stop it is tantamount to tacit approval. Earlier in the season, some idiot drove through two wooden posts, flattened a chainlink fence before driving across the 3rd base line, the pitcher's mound, the 1st baseline, and then into toe opposite dugout. Police took a report. The city repaired the damage, but, consistent with the city's failure to learn from past experiences, this did not precipitate any change in behavior....like locking three gates when the park is not being used for baseball.

Very little has changed. The lights come on too early, and they stay on well after the ballplayers are gone. 40 lamps in total surround the two fields, which are almost always both on, even if only one field is being used. These metal-halide lamps are typically either 1000- or 1500-watts each (https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/gmp/athletic_lighting_rpt.pdf), so at any given time somewhere between 40,000 and 60,000 watts of electricity are being used....for no good reason other than sheer laziness on the part of Little League. This is a missed teaching opportunity, as the children in Little League are being taught nothing about gratitude, responsibility, or conservation, a theme that's repeated by the fact that recycling is nonexistent at this and every other West Haven public park. Similarly, Little League apparently refuses to cooperate with the city in locking the three perfectly functional gates into the park, thereby leaving it fully available to the vandalism and illegal dumping that occurs regularly.
