The exterior defilement of the Hall-Benedict Drug Company Building at Orange and Linden streets is nearly complete (building information online at wikipedia.org). “The building was listed on the National Register in 1986. It is also a contributing property in the Whitney Avenue Historic District.” One of the most important characteristics of an historic building is the original windows. Almost all of the windows on the Hall-Benedict Drug building have been replaced with windows that are not compatible with the historic appearance and character of the building. The old windows are on the way to the landfill. Why does a building on the National Register of Historic Places not receive the same protection as a building in a New Haven historic district? This essentially a rant -- I wish the city would help preserve historic buildings, particularly as we see many large, industrial-looking apartment complexes built all over town.

S. Is the problem blight (trash, etc) outside, or is it a problem with the building (illegal use, housing code violation, etc)?
