This office does not do BOARD UPS. We have taken them to court and put liens against the property. BOARD UPS are done through Buildings and Streets. This has been referred to them.

Court is relevant as it can fine the owner and compel them to make the changes needed.

So whose job is it to compel the owner to carry out required works? And does this action account for an owner who has consistently ignored previous demands for action? In which case who among the different departments in local government will it ultimately fall to to carry out boarding up the building asap?

26 Manhattan garden is so overgrown that it is destroying our fence from that side. Also neighbours on other side have problems with the horrendous overgrowth. It’s like living Nextdoor to a swampy jungle with raccoons and rodents roaming everywhere.

Now there has been a recent break in in the area, and the perpetrator gained access via the unsecured, open gate on this vacant lot. The owner needs to be held responsible and this property needs to be secured.

Can’t the city just use eminent domain to take this property that’s clearly been abandoned by the owner? Or is the city just waiting for some private investor to do it for them. This is not fair to people

Hi Christina, it is my understanding, and confirmed by talking with the owner’s contractor, that the landlord is intentionally allowing the property to deteriorate so that he can get approval to demolish it. In the meantime, his intentional negligence has created a shelter for criminal activity, led to multiple fires that could have easily spread to surrounding properties if they were not immediately put out, enabled a break-in at an adjacent property where an two adults and an infant were sleeping, and has been the cause of countless calls to the local police department and 911, utilizing resources that should go towards something else. If the owner is enabled to demolish the building and put in something else, his behavior will be rewarded. What options do we have to stop this from happening?

Additionally, the property is still in shambles. There is graffiti in the back yard and a crucified squirrel hanging in the front yard where there used to be a Virgin Mary statue.

I would also like to say that I appreciate that the owner has finally taken action, but only in the 24 hours leading up to an inspection (information I also received from the contractor), after leading to multiples years of difficulty to the local community and actual trauma caused to neighbors who have suffered real consequences.

Correction: I appreciate that the town has taken action, not the owner. He has only done the minimum at the threat from your team. I mean to express my gratitude to the town, not to the owner.

Our supervisor inspected this and Buildings and Streets have boarded up the property and anything further is a public safety issue or code compliance issue. @wassem
