I agree there needs to be more signage. Additionally, deploy the CHP we have contracted with there for traffic enforecment for a couple of weeks, just as they have in another neighborhood where people were routinely flying through the stop signs. After a number of people get ticketed they'll get the message. Email your PSO, captain and special resources commander for your police area.

I comment before. This situation must be addressed before lives are lost.

This street is still so very dangerous. We helped the victim of a hit and run a couple weeks ago. She was able to go home, with a banged a bloodied elbow. The City of Oakland is in serious neglect. Faded crosswalks, lack of signage, and enforcement, all near many schools, parks, a birth center, community garden, and a high density residential environment.

I suggest citizens stop waiting for the City to acknowledge the @#$% child section of Park Blvd, and paint the crosswalks themselves, make DIY signage, and hold awareness actions-traffic slowdown walks. email parkcommunitygarden@gmail.com

I agree with the other contributors. Traffic and pedestrian safety should be a much higher priority. Our illustrious politicians downtown only give lip service to the problem.

THE SOLUTION: We need to pressure the City Council to fund 6-8 OPD traffic officers on motorcycles. Giving speeders and those who do not stop at occupied crosswalks nice fat tickets should break them of their dangerous habits.

There was a death in the early 90s attributed to speeding motorists on Park Blvd. The response was to install a light at the corner of Spruce. There used to be a speed monitor but that has been gone for several years. Motorists need to learn to slow down and stop for pedestrians. Perhaps flashing lights should be installed.

Anyone care to participate in a grassroots diy sign making effort? Plenty of spots to place them. High visibility signs do help. It will have the possible side effect of shaming the city at the same time. We can use Park Community Garden as a space to make the signs. This could really make a difference, as opposed to me angrily standing off wanna-be race drivers with my bike and attached cart in front of the garden and natural birth center.

I agree that there needs to be more speed limit signs on Park Blvd. Proper notification of the speed limit to drivers is actually a legal requirement. Along with the proposed, improvement in speed-limit signage, Oakland needs to revive the OPD traffic officers on motorcycles. Traffic officers would make short work of the speeders on Park Blvd and Harrison Street (just as bad as Park Blvd.).

Both the curvy nature of Harrison and Park make them fun streets to go fast on, I've had to catch myself a few times when I do drive.

Thank you for revisiting this issue on the lack of 25 MPH signs & the speeding, and thank you for organizing a grassroots effort to address the problem.
FYI... we will be doing an event "Bike To Safety" - the community, families and youths will be biking with our Chief of Police and our Area Captain and his officers...
3 main purposes:
1) address bike safety rules for the cyclists, as well as for the motorists - since we both are sharing the roads.
2) building a stronger Community Policing by getting to know the OPD and the officers.
3) address the lack of 25 MPH signs on Park Blvd, from Oakland High to E-18th St. And, yes the speeding problem.
Date & time: Saturday, Oct 18th early morning to noon.
Please stay tuned for more details & announcement.
My approach: always try to work with the city & the officers first.

Any new updates regarding the speeding issue? I know that the trailer was out for a period of time a few weeks back and there may have also been some sensor cables put out during that time as well, but still a lot of horrific driving going on.

Instead of working for all of us, Mayor Schaaf seems intently focusing people living on the street and those here illegally. What about some 25 mph signs,Madame Mayor?

The city of Oakland just don't care about us. It's that simple. They only care about money and votes.

All the speed limit, stop signs and traffic lights in the world won't fix these problems. A lot of people out here make their own rules, they don't follow anyone's laws but their own. The only way to make them comply is by enforcing the law and citing violators, but that just isn't happening in Oakland and probably won't for a long time.

They keep defunding the police department, protesting any action by the police to clean up Oakland and doing nothing to improve conditions here. Oakland just continues to deteriorate and fall further and further into insolvency, just like how John Russo predicted it would.

The only way to really fix Oakland is to completely clean out all the corrupt officials in city hall and replace them with people who actually care, refuse to back down in the face of growing opposition from malicious/ignorant residents and are actually qualified to do their jobs.

Apparently it is 5years later and 10700 views nothing and on top of that there is nearly no traffic enforcement happening by OPD.

Agreed. I last commented on this 3 years ago and its just gotten worse. Signs mean nothing to drivers. We need regular enforcement as a deterrent. I thought a road diet plan was supposed to be implemented this year, but here we are into August.

PLUS.... From MacArthur & Park, to the Lake, the same fools fly thru, past the school and two churches and an entire neighborhood. These are COMMUTERS, who do not care about our NEIGHBORHOOD. More signs, and, more speed traps. YES!!!

Once again, unless scofflaw drivers obey the 25 mph speed limit on Park Blvd., any additional signs only quality as "decorative'. I live near Park Blvd., and NEVER see OPD Traffic Officers or any OPD officers ever give speeding citations. The Area 3 Commander, Captain Hamilton is a do-nothing dud. His predecessor, Captain Orozco, was the very best police commander that I ever worked with. He was very community oriented. When Captain Orozco retired, it was a real loss the the community.

I agree that too many vehicles speed along Park Blvd. There needs to be more street calming on that road as well as many others.

Area 3 Commander, Captain Hamilton, retired over a year ago. His replacement, Kirk Coleman, was recently transferred. I believe the current Area 3 Commander is out on medical leave. We could use some more stability in Area 3 Commanders.

Thanks, Rachel for the update on retired Captain Hamilton. Agreed that having solid leadership in Area 3 is essential for improving police services. Maybe, we'll get lucky with a new Area 3 Commander that supports community-based policing.
