On a Saturday ride with Va-Hi Velo we headed south on Highland from Aurora Coffee. We have ridden this stretch many times. I thought we were going straight towards downtown and was in the right lane. The group decided to go left at the light. Being very aware of the expansion joint. I approached carefully. I went to hop the joint and misjudged the distance, landing in the joint where it was about an inch deep. I fell catching my full wieght on my wrist. It was dislocated and had multiple breaks. Hopefully the image will spur some action on getting this fixed. I go for surgery, plate and screws tomorrow.
Over the years this expansion joint has injured many cyclist from pro racers in the Tour de Georgia to commuters indicating just how persistently dangerous this joint is. We all know about it but it continues to injure us. I remind my cycling friends about the expansion joint but we all come close to dropping our tires into it one day or another. Riders will continue to be injured until it is fixed.

This joint requires either a "bunny hop" or a change in bicycle path to cross the joint acutely. Either of these maneuvers can be constrained by traffic, making a fall in front of a moving car likely.
