Winding Drive is a sub-local road. The Road Commission for Oakland County policy is that we do not fund the resurfacing of sub-local roads. However, if the residents of the road would like to pay for the resuracing of the road, we will set up a special assessment district, which allows you to pay for the resurfacing over 10 years, with the cost allocated to property owners through their property tax assessment. If you are interested in pursuing this option, please contact the Road Commission's Subdivision Improvement and Development Division at 248-645-2000, ext. 2270, and we'll explain the process to you, and provide assistance throughout the process.
We have contacted the road commission, they said it's not their problem. We have contacted the township, they said it's not their problem. Who is going to fix this road? Who's problem is it?
The Road Commission did not say "it's not our problem." We said the long-standing policy of the Road Commission is that we do not pay for the resurfacing of sub-local roads, but we will assist the residents in setting up a special assessment district and arrange for the paving if at least 51% of the property owners agree to pay for it through the special assessment district. This is the same situation as all other subdivision roads in all townships in Oakland County. Please see post below for phone number to call for more information about a special assessment district.

This road is not like all other roads in the township! There is a school on this road and it is a feeder to several other streets in this sub along with being a major cut through for traffic. Wake up before it's too late and some child gets run over by an out of control car !
The Road Commission is more then happy to fix it if all of the property owners agree to pay for it !! This problem has been caused by constant traffic, including trucks, that cut through our neighborhood. Presently collected tax revenues should be used to completely resurface this road !!!
If you guys would just agree to a special tax assessment they would fix it. I live right off of south winding & personally don't have a problem with paying extra to have a better road to drive on that isn't going to mess up my vehicle. You all just want to complain about it & don't want to do anything to fix the problem. So quit complaining if your not going to accept the only solution, or agree to the special tax assessment for goodness sake!!!!
Terrible road surface, the worst around... it's used by many people as a cut through. only good thing about this road being so awful is maybe it limits the speeders that would otherwise race by the elementary school. Why are there no sidewalks near the school? Kids have to walk in the street. Awful.
This road is in such bad shape because of the bus traffic during the school year and the fact that it was never constructed to handle the weight of the busses. The other issue is the lack of drainage, this allows the water to sit on the road and work its way under. With the heavy buses and constant traffic, the hydraulic action destroys the road surface. Add to this the improper "repair" the OCRC throws at it and we have the current state of disrepair. I understand that the residents have to pay to have it repaired, but what will the repair entail? Will it be rebuilt to withstand the abuse it gets or will they grind it off and repave it knowing full well it will fail again within 2-4 years and be right back where it is now? I have a feeling it will be the latter. With the school being on this road, the township needs to man up and take care of this. If it were a simple side road, then go with the special assesment. This road gets more use from people who don't live in the sub than it does from residents that live on the road. Why should they ve responsible for the inability of the township or the Road Commision to keep the street in good shape? C'mon Waterford Township, put on your big kid pants and get this road done!
Just went through there recently. People putting trailers and boulders in their yards so its virtually impassable. This needs to be remedied, and QUICK!
