They are a motorized vehicle that weighs about 40 pounds. It is against both state law and the licensing agreements to ride on sidewalks; they are prohibited from obstructing pedestrian paths. Both Bird and Lyft have been asked to make the SAB a “slow zone” (less than their capable 15mph since the speed limit for bikes on the bridge is 10). So technically they could ride slowly in the center of the SAB with the bikes. I’ve seen them fly past bikes. With all that said- there is poor compliance by both Lyft and Bird vendors (to apply requested slow zones or geofenced zones properly) and I am not aware of any enforcement of the licensing agreement by the Dept of Public Works- in fact- after 3400 citizen complaints to 311- they shut the scooter category down making it difficult to report offenses. Call your city council member to complain. And good luck with that.
