Along with the Mt. Auburn and Aberdeen Street intersection construction, please provide the following street markings. At the close by intersection Mt. Auburn and Brattle Street, please mark a don't block the box with road striping and a sign. The new right turn lane, as that lane always has, blocks entry from Brattle Street to the straight ahead lane on Mount Auburn. This issue was raised, among other places, at a walk around public meeting for this project.r

Thank you. As part of the public process for this project, we did hear and evaluate requests for Do Not Block the Intersection markings at multiple locations. The final pavement marking plan that will be implemented is posted to the project website, and can be viewed at the link below. The markings plan includes a Do Not Block the Intersection marking for the combined driveway of 583-587 Mt Auburn St. This is paired with a more forward stop bar location, which will shorten the length of the intersection, improving intersection efficiency and allowing more green time for Mt Auburn St traffic.
The Engineering Dept at TP&T reviewed placing an additional Box marking at the Brattle St exit, but determined not to. Typical Box markings are placed where traffic is turning across a queue of stopped vehicles, not into a queue. Lefts turns are prohibited out of Brattle St. Right turning traffic out of Brattle would fill the box that drivers would be required to keep clear. To mitigate the concern of Brattle St traffic being unable to turn right onto Mt Auburn St and enter the left lane to continue straight, we will implement signal timing that will clear the right lane and through lane on Mt Auburn St at the same time, which will provide sufficient gap for Brattle St to exit. We will continue to monitor the intersection after implementation to consider any potential future modifications, if needed.
