I'd be willing to bet you're not even from here, are you? If you were, you'd have known that moving into that gentrification station you're in would put you smack dab across the street from the largest homeless encampment in NorCal. Well, at least we were. Until 300 people were displaced and their homes were bulldozed, leaving them with literally no options. The closure of our community was so egregious that it's at the center of an active lawsuit, and therefore I cannot disclose any further details. What I can tell you is, before they destroyed our home, Wood Street Commons was the site of a functioning, peer run, self sustaining society. We fed the hungry, clothes the cold, and offered respite to those who had nowhere else to go. Or community kitchen was the gathering place for community suppers every week. We even had a small garden and a wood fired oven. We distributed donations to those who needed them most, and offered an ear to those who otherwise went unheard. We fought hard for our home, and we held off the greedy, corporate developers that, with the city's help, spread the false narrative that we were impending the development of "affordable housing". Let me tell you a little secret: affordable housing is only affordable if you make over 75000 a year... the reason the homeless population is exploding, is because the cost of rent and owning a home is so disproportionately expensive that even if you have an entry level job, you probably don't make enough to pay for rent along with all the other living expenses.
The real reason the city shut is down is because we proved that money isn't a necessary evil. That an unhoused community can be strong, organized and self-sufficient. That you don't have to fed the machine and live the lie to be successful. That real success, real wealth, comes in the form of freedom, friendship, and family. That life is to short to not be happy, even if that means doing things differently.
Life after 1707 is very different. We've tried to carry on, and in some ways we are. But when the system is set up to help you fail, it's hard to keep going.
I went into the cabins, against my better judgements. I tried to give the city a chance to keep their word. As a result, I was further traumatized, assaulted, and ultimately left on the sidewalk, right where I started. The promise of housing within 90 days, as I suspected, was a lie. Just like every other claim that has been made by BOSS.
We've already been posted. In a few days, we'll be moved again like cattle, swept away like the trash you think we are. But until then, your car won't be passed on, your apartment won't be burned down, and your packages will actually make it to you. And you know why? Because the trash you hate so much, will make sure of it. And until we are forcefully, illegally moved again, we are neighbors- and whether it's reciprocated or not, we're here if you need anything...
