The entire playground is a baby death trap. Whenever we go to Eastgate, we have a large, plastic "hamster" ball that we put our two-year old in. That way, I can play on my phone and drink my mocha latte without having to worry about whatever it is that she occupies her time with.

@srsly, I've had my own kid fall off the top step a few months ago. I didn't say anything at the time but was recently at the playground and another parent independently expressed the same concern so I said I'd bring it up for discussion. Have you looked at that stairs? Do you have kids? I can't believe if either one is true that there's not even some question in your mind to the safety of that steps. If I wanted to design a steps in order to actually be dangerous to children it would probably look similar to those stairs.

My son learned to climb on these exact steps. But I was right there with him when he did. Playgrounds have 'unsafe' stuff for kids all over the place. Parents need to be responsible watch their kids appropriately. Otherwise just take the entire playground down.

My daughter just turned 3. We live in the neighborhood and go to Eastgate almost every warm, sunny weekend. She's been on these stairs a hundred times. And, she's fallen off these stairs and other parts of the jungle gym dozens of times. No big deal, she brushes herself off, maybe cries, and maybe gets a bandaid if there's a boo-boo. Part of growing up, if you ask me.

Since this playground was designed for younger children, there should be railings installed. My son, who is 2 years old, and is very agile for his age, has fallen off of the steps.

I walk through this area frequently so I stopped by to take a look a few days ago. These steps seem pretty reasonable to me. Part of the learning experience for kids is letting them put themselves in 'dangerous' (controlled danger) scenarios and coming up with a solution. The solution here is a very soft landing surface should a fall occur and a railing on the steps should your child desire a bit more assistance. COULD someone get hurt on these steps? Sure they could, but then again, that goes for most any piece of play equipment anywhere! Ever take a look at those big spider web nets at Pullen Park? I keep waiting on a kid to end up with a compound fracture on that thing! These steps are pretty mild overall in my opinion.

This play unit at Eastgate was inspected by 2 of our National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA) Certified Playground Safety Inspectors (CPSI) and deemed to be compliant with American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM standards). This means the design was deemed safe for the intended use, and was installed and is maintained to these standards, which we use as our guidelines for safety and maintenance.
