I don't understand why I see 3-4 cars go through traffic lights all the time! Don't the police watch for these people? When I took driver's ed (a long time ago) you wouldn't dare go through a light, rules of the road were like the Bible.
Yes, this is a problem of increasing incidence. The intersection of Route 34 and Greenway Road (at the commuter parking lot off the Parkway) and the lights leading to the Connecticut Post Mall in Milford immediately come to mind. We are not talking "near misses", but numerous drivers who streak through long after the light has turned red. Most seem to be drivers of private cars, but sometimes it's a large truck. Will it take someone getting killed for action to be taken? All the troopers and officers need to do is sit a couple of cars at these sites, and they would pick up dozens of violators a day!Imagine the revenue collected from the tickets, and improvements in public safety that would result!
A part of the problem at this intersection is that if 5-6 cars are waiting at the light, only 3-4 get through because the light is very short. Then it turns green for one side, then another, then the opposite - even if nobody is waiting at those 3 lights. So a driver can sit and wait for a minute and a half because he missed the last light, and he'll be sitting at an empty intersection.
I'm not excusing this, just offering an explanation. Hamden and New Haven have tons of intersections where the lights tend to turn red quite often, even if there's no cross-traffic, and even when there may be a cars backed up waiting for a green.
When we first moved to Hamden we thought there should be a bumper sticker saying, "Welcome to CT: Red lights optional." But after seeing SO many cars going through we feel it should say: "Welcome to CT: Red lights NOT optional." I fear that won't be the case until there's a major accident.
We are excited to announce that the Town of Hamden is now a partner with SeeClickFix! The Town will officially be launching SeeClickFix on Monday, October 23, 2017. This request was submitted prior to the Town using SeeClickFix, so we have closed this issue. If this is still a problem, please open a new issue on SeeClickFix. Thank you for your concern and for helping to strengthen your community!
