Stop sign makes more sense

It's true; a stop sign here would be great. Remember the cone things they put in the street a few years back? It shows they know about the problem here. Time to get serious about it...I mean since they're serious about taking so many of the available parking spaces away, how about some safer streets....

We need a stop sign. When someone driving does stop for me as I'm crossing the street, I'm very concerned they will be hit by another car from behind.

Not a traffic light, maybe flashing yellow crosswalk lights are better than a stop sign. But something should be done.

twice in two weeks cars have been rear ended here as one stopped for a pedestrian...and that's just what I saw. The speed cars come through this section of Dolores is ridiculous; they are practically encouraged to speed past the most popular and most used park in SF. Speed trap SFPD?

FWIW, as I recall Supervisor Bevan Dufty explained at a recent community meeting, the city government has researched the safety of 19th and Dolores St, however their recommendation, to paraphrase Bevan's paraphrasing, was to do nothing as a stop sign would create a false sense of security for pedestrians and more rear-end cars accidents.

Experience at this corner. About a month ago, at about 9 am Saturday morning I was crossing this crosswalk to get into the park. A car going south came at me like it wasn't going to stop. Fear took over me and I ran out of the crosswalk, Then looked back at the car. It was seemed to be a man and wife couple. I had a look of WTF and fear. The women passenger was prepared and giving me the finger.

I think a traffic light would be better than a stop sign. Drivers would still roll over a stop sign even if a pedestrian is in the crosswalk. With so much car and foot traffic, this intersection requires definitive enforcement of the right of way.

What's the speed limit on this intersection (legal one) vs the one driven?

I agree with flashing traffic crosswalk lights for visibility at night and during the day.

If anything is done, it should be a stop light. Stop signs are routinely ignored by bicyclists and would not help matters.

I live down the street from this intersection as well as park in the area. A large majority of drivers do not take any caution when they get to this intersection.

It's too short a distance for another stop light on Dolores, but at least a stop sign, with warnings of a stop coming up, plus flashing lights for pedestrians, and better speed limit notifications in the area would help.

anything is better than what we have right now. Ideally a stop light, but a stop sign will do for now. Folks roll down the hill aiming for 18th str and brake hard when they see us waiting on 19th. Theres too many people (also with dogs) crossing that intersection. i even see cops on busy days but theyre busy tending to unruly people.

I like the idea of the bulbout and very prominently marked crosswalks. Perhaps a flashing light warning cars to look for pedestrians crossing. Another option would be a stoplight and walk signal that only activates on request.

With more and more people ignoring stop signs, a light would probably be safer for pedestrians. Some thing is needed. Perhaps a bush to hide a patrol car behind.

Stop signs *do* give a false sense of security. (After you stop, you go! go! go! and rarely look around you as you're accelerating.) Better would be traffic calming features, to force the drivers to slow and pay attention, rather than asking them to.

The SFMTA has ruled that a stop sign or traffic lights are out of the question. They will, however, paint "zebra style" crosswalks as well as other improvements laid out by the streetscape plan.

a stop sign seems so much cheaper than painting zebra. Stop signs wont have to be "repainted" every few years. maybe the community should have a fund raise and help pay for the stop sign.
