You're whining about having to ride around cars on a street that people in wheelchairs cannot use at all. How privileged do you think you are?

Boy would it be nice to see some of that righteous indignation getting directed at all the money and time that goes to support cars. Somehow I'm not seeing this kind of comment on SCF reports of potholes, broken traffic signals, or illegally parked cars. Somehow it's only cyclists who get the heat. What cyclist hurt you?

I realize that being forced to ride your bicycles around parked cars is a traumatic, life-altering experience for spoiled little children but with enough therapy, you 'll recover.

David, we're allies with the OP. We are in this fight together against turning our city over to cars. Mulit-modal accessibility and improvements like Toronto barriers and protected lanes allow for all human powered vehicles(bikes, wheelchairs, scooters, etc.) to transit the busiest corridors of our city without getting run over by cars. Having to maneuver in and out of traffic is dangerous for everyone not in a car. New haven existed in its current street layout for hundreds of years without cars its only the last 75 that we have demolished our public space and ceded our street safety to the needs of mostly suburban commuters.

Really, then why is there a bike lane of College St and no way for someone in a wheelchair to access the Music Hall from either direction? Is it because people who use wheelchairs lobbied for it?

Why is this gentleman riding his wheelchair in a bike lane? Did he lobby the city "give them a bike lane so I can use it and get hit by a car in it?"

Why does the Safe Routes for All plan contain 563 instances of " bike" or "bicycle" and 3 mentions of wheelchair? Are folks who can't walk responsible for that? Are blind folks responsible for that plan having not one mention of audibles pedestrian warning. Did they lobby the city 'give us no way to know when it's safe to cross this street?'

Why can bikers access and have a more pleasant ride to the summit of East Rock while people who have disabilities are not permitted to access it at all?

Why is there a bike lane and no way for anyone who has a disabilities to use the sidewalk next to Hillhouse High School?

Is it because bicyclists chanted "Us. Us. Us.: or because you all can and will only chant "Me. Me. Me. Me. Me./"

David, protected mobility lanes and paths like the farmington canal greenway are accessible to wheelchairs and bicycles alike. Sidewalks are the primary route for wheelchairs and we dont want bikes on the sidewalks. The road to the top of east rock is still there and very accessible to bikes, wheelchairs, and pedestrians; just not cars. By creating fully protected lanes, road diets, and lowering car travel speeds throughout new haven our city is better for all.

East Rock park is sooo much better without cars!

The 15,000 New Haven Residents who have disabilities have a right to access the summit of East Rock Park. (see Galusha v. NY Dept of Environmental Conservation). Cars are not the issue and not the only way to provide that access. If you would like the US District Court here to order the roads reopened and order the city to come up with a permit system that the city cannot enforce, you can have that, along with a bill for damages ad attorney's fees

"28CFR130 (a) No qualified individual with a disability shall, on the basis of disability, be excluded from participation in or be denied the benefits of the services, programs, or activities of a public entity, or be subjected to discrimination by any public entity."

The Safe Routes for All plan used crash data, the number of instersections without crosswalks, etc. to locate the most problematic neighorhoods that had been underserved. "Underserved," of course means "minority-White."

As far as I know, the city has not implemented any safety improvements in those minority-White neighborhoods. It has, however, installed bike lanes on Wall and Trumbull. in a majority-White neighborhood, implemented none of the safety improvements for those streets and violated the alteration requirements of Federal law and left both streets impassable to people who have disabilities.

New Haven's bicyclists are now pushing the city to install a bike lane on Orange, in an even Whiter neighborhood....and that says what it says about New Haven's bicyclists.

All residents of New Haven have the privilege to use East Rock Park including the summit area. No residents of New Haven have the privilege of driving their cars to the summit area of East Rock Park. Privately owned cars may be left in the public space provided for them at the base of East Rock park or in the lot adjacent to Wilbur Cross.

I agree with you. Lets install protected bike lanes in every neighborhood in New Haven.

David there is a road to the top of East rock that any New Haven resident has the privilege of using. East Rock park roads have been opened to walkers, runners, strollers, bicycles, wheelchairs, scooters, skateboards, Roller-skates, And if the winter is good enough, cross country skis, and sleds.

There are two roads to the one road that goes to the summit. Both were barricaded...or we would not be having this conversation..

The barricades only prevent cars from accessing the road, opening it to all other users. Before the barricades, road, user not in a car were Relegated to the gutters. Shoulders, and sidewalks.The city is about to do the same thing to High street. This will mostly benefit YALE , but it does give more public space back to the citizens of our city.

I'll tell you what - find someone to break both of your kneecaps (I'm sure there are people who want to do that). Then try to move the barriers and make it up that hill in whatever assistive device they give you. The, when you go tumbling down the hill on the way down, log into this from the ER and report on your injuries. Maybe you'll grow up and learn that the universe doesn't exist to serve you.
