This is an important intersection, and busy, and the island is there for a reason, because otherwise it's impossible for pedestrians to cross all the way over without the light changing and catching them in the middle of the street.

Agree with comments above. What's interesting is that the snow/ice here actually covers a much larger area than the pedestrian island itself. This is what is known as a 'sneckdown' and it indicates that a lot of roadway surface is functionally unnecessary for driving. The ped island could be twice as large here without any adverse effect on traffic.

Should I leave this open until next winter when we will have the same problem? Hmmmmmmm.
