This concerns the sidewalk on the west side of St. Mary's Street between College Place and Calvin (the Wiley elementary school frontage.) The "planting strip" between the sidewalk and the back of curb is only about 8-10 inches wide. Storm drainage along this portion of the street is sheet flow on the surface, and the water has washed all the dirt out of the planting strip making it a trip hazard. The PTA has discussed the problem and we do not think that we would be able to plant in the strip without the storm water washing away our efforts. A small portion of the strip has been filled in with concrete (about 10 feet south and 40 feet north of W. Jones street) but we don't know when this was done or by whom. This makes the sidewalk feel safer, and eliminates the trip hazard. Would it be possible for the City to fill in the rest of the planting strip between College Place and Calvin with concrete?
