Snow removal operations yesterday resulted in a near-miss involving a child pedestrian and a motorist on 69 ave near 112 st. When the street was plowed, instead of splitting the snow on both sides (or pushing all the snow on the north side, since that side has no driveways or a sidewalk), the plow pushed all the snow to the south side that has a sidewalk and driveways with only a small patch of lawn separating each home. The plow did the same thing the last time they plowed or street. When they left, a 3 ft high by 4 ft wide pile of ice/snow chunks was left along the south side, covering most of the sidewalk along the way. On the side with no sidewalk or driveways, a small row about 1 ft high and wide of snow/ice was present (only what fell off the top of the plows blade while it was pushing the snow to the south side) . At approximately 4:30pm while I was trying to shovel my driveway, I witnessed a child on the south side of the road having to climb up over the row of snow and ice to walk on the street because the sidewalk was impassable. It is a narrow street, and a big 4X4 truck was close to the south side of the road traveling east on 69 ave about to turn north onto 112St . The child slipped and slid onto the road. The driver narrowly avoided the child and I could tell he got the fright of his life because the truck stayed sill for a minute before he drove off again. The child was not hurt but it was a very close call. The worst thing is that no one on the south side has any space to put the snow, so many of them up the street from me are just pushing it back onto the road, defeating the whole purpose of plowing the road in the first place. I feel the city left the road and sidewalk in an unsafe condition and I don’t even want my child out there walking for fear it may happen to her. The silliest thing about all this is that there is a very easy fix. The north side of the street has no driveways and no sidewalk so the snow should be piled there, not on the south side where the sidewalk is. I have attached one photo of the condition the city left our area in (I have many more but this site will only allow me to upload only one). If someone gets hit by a vehicle I feel the city should be held responsible.
The photo shows the sidewalk in front of my house, looking east.
